Darl Is Out, Farewell Master Gamer
Their cunning master plan failed, despite masterful gaming of the system and support from deep-pockets third parties who were happy to write checks, stay behind the scenes, and let Mr. McBride take the hits.
The motives for these lawsuits are still unclear. If the expectation was that these giant companies would roll over and pay protection money, or buy SCO at a handsome premium, someone miscalculated badly. Another theory is that Microsoft is behind all this with the goal of spreading fear and uncertainty about Linux and derailing its adoption, with no real hope of winning any lawsuits. Perhaps it is a confluence of villainy, each with their own goals.
It has been a marvelous education thanks to Groklaw. Without Groklaw we would not have enjoyed such deep, educated coverage, and would have been at the mercy of shallow, inaccurate reporting. Surprisingly, a lot of lousy news coverage continued even after Groklaw became famous-- I guess even spoon-feeding isn't enough in some cases.
In addition to the noisy and ever-quotable Darl, we also got to meet Dan Lyons, Laura DiDio, Maureen O'Gara, Rob Enderle, the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, and various other shills, trolls, and mouthpieces. I hope it was worth it for them; me, I can't imagine a high enough price.
Good-bye Darl McBride, it was fun while it lasted. Well, no, actually it wasn't fun at all. I wish you well, and hope you find an honest job this time.

Don't forget to mention the master of bad spin, Blake Stowell, the PR head of SCO. Boy, could he tie himself up in knots!
While I hope its over its not likely. I imagine the remaining morons will keep trying until they have drained every last cent from the companies piggy bank and ruined any last shred of a good reputation left for Caldera/SCO.
My greatest pleasure over the last several years was the moment I was able to advise a customer to dump their old SCO server and move to Linux. They did. :)
They later asked me to take the old server off their hands which led to my second greatest pleasure. Wiping SCO off the drive and setting it up to do duty as my office email server running Linux. I smile every time I walk past it. ;)
Heres hoping his next job is one of the following:
Being paid $1.25 an hour to stand in line for lobbyists.
Working the late shift at 7/11.
Washing cars down at "Big Bob's Rusty Iron" used car lot.
Wearing a tight short skirt, spiked high heels, a wig, and a includes lot of waving at passing cars.
Am I being too generous in the job department for ol' Duhrl?
Just fine comments from John Helms...hehehehehe
I feel sorry for his family. How would you feel having a father/husband like that?
But no, we haven't seen the end of Durl. He thinks he's smarter than everyone else, and he'll keep trying. And failing.
Of course we haven't seen the end of him. Since the last defeat, Darl has merely fled to a remote site in the Himalayan mountains, where he is seeking advanced training in the ancient arts of windmill-tilting and dead-horse-beating.
He will be back.
(And I will have popcorn.)
Mr. McBride will be back, maybe not in Computer circles, but he won't stay down. He was a VP with an international furniture store (Ikea) before SCO. He will likely just change industries.
His actual specialty appears to be lawsuits. He walked away from Ikea with several millions, after suing them. I'm sure that he made several millions from the whole SCO thing.
If he had actually understood computers, he would not have made some of the real bonehead blunders that were there over the last 6 or 7 years.
As it was, he did manage to hold on for a long time. It is rare that anyone can keep a case going for 7 years when more than one judge tells you that you have no evidence. (Wells, then Kimball, now the bankruptcy court judge.)
The man is tenacious. Some businesses need that.
McBride has a very bright future working with others just like him. The tea baggers, the Faux News Channel, birthers, deathers, Orly Taits, and many other fact/truth challenged groups. Blowhards seem to never go away for long. I am sure Sarah Palin could use him on her staff.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
Wouldn't it be nice if everybody just minded their business.
